Galectin-1 Exerts Inhibitory Effects during DENV-1 Infection
Dengue virus (DENV) is an enveloped RNA virus that is mosquito-transmitted and can infect a variety of immune and non-immune cells. Response to infection ranges from asymptomatic disease to a severe disorder known as dengue hemorrhagic fever. Despite efforts to control the disease, there are no effective treatments or vaccines. In our search for new antiviral compounds to combat infection by de...
متن کاملEndogenous galectin-1 exerts tonic inhibition on experimental arthritis.
Little is known about the role(s) of endogenous galectin-1 (Gal-1) in arthritis. In this study we queried whether antiarthritic functions for this effector of endogenous anti-inflammation could be unveiled by studying collagen-induced arthritis in Gal-1(-/-) mice. Gal-1(-/-) and C57BL/6J [wild-type (WT)] mice received an immunization of chicken type II collagen (CII) in CFA followed by a booste...
متن کاملGalectin-1 and immune suppression during radiotherapy.
Radiotherapy induces galectin-1 (Gal-1) secretion by tumors, which induces CD8(+) T-cell apoptosis and lymphopenia. These effects are substantially decreased by Gal-1 shRNA. Inhibition of Gal-1 may be an effective strategy for overcoming radiation-induced lymphopenia, which may improve clinical outcomes.
متن کاملNovel insights into the inhibitory effects of Galectin-1 on neutrophil recruitment under flow.
Galectin-1 (Gal-1) is a beta-galactoside-binding protein endowed with anti-inflammatory properties. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of endogenous and exogenous Gal-1 on neutrophil recruitment onto TNF-treated endothelium. The effect of human recombinant (hr)Gal-1 on markers of neutrophil activation (CD11b expression, P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1, and L-selectin shed...
متن کاملSecretion of Galectin-9 as a DAMP during Dengue Virus Infection in THP-1 Cells
Damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) are endogenous cellular molecules released to the extracellular environment in response to stress conditions such as virus infection. Galectins are β-galactoside-binding proteins that are widely expressed in cells and tissues of the immune system, are localized in the cell cytoplasm, and have roles in inflammatory responses and immune responses again...
